London’s Fittest Firefighter Continued

Saturday went very well! Great weather and great crowds came to see London’s Firefighters compete to be crowned London’s Fittest Firefighter! This year saw a brand new physically demanding course.

The course started with a 500m row followed by 20 reps of 40kg bench press, 20 bench step ups, change in to fire gear, short run to equipment, connect a standpipe, bowl out 2 lengths of 70mm hose, connect the two lengths together and to the standpipe, attach a branch and run out the 2 lengths to the other end of the course, a shuttle run carrying 2 x 25kg foam drums, tie a line to a trolly carrying 12 x 25kg bags of sand, pull the trolly over approximately 10m, 20 x bunny hops over a weights bench, 3 x 25kg sand bag shuttle runs, using a sledgehammer hit a weight (wight TBC) using a Keiser machine, back to the hose and make up 1 x length, 4 x flips of a large HGV tyre, crawl through a tunnel, grab a 12 stone dummy and drag back throughout the tunnel and finally carry the 12 stone dummy approximately 20m across the finish line!

Times were very impressive from the start. Firefighter Dave Awde from A21 Paddington White Watch set a very fast time of 7:17 which was in place for a long time. However it was closely beaten by a few others eventually, but the eventual winner, Watch Manager Lee Phillips with a staggering time of 6:31!

There were also team events, comprising of the same events but shared between 3 firefighters on each team. The winners of the team event was H21 Clapham ‘A’ with a time of 6:08.

The event will be held again next year and will be good to get even larger crowds in Covent Garden to cheers on London’s Bravest! And don’t forget it’s absolutely free!!!
